UniForum NZ members can apply for an annual research grant of $3000 made available for academic research in the Unix or Open Systems area.

The 1999 grant was awarded to John Paynter and Edwin Lim of MSIS, Auckland University, for research towards the legal implications of e-commerce activities. Here is the supplied title and abstract of the project, scheduled to be completed by November 1999:

Electronic Commerce - Law Vs Technology

This project consists of an in-depth review of the legal implications of Electronic Commerce and the difficulties posed by technology from legal and technical persectives. Individual topics will include: encryption, differing levels of E-commerce development, taxation, conflict of laws, New Zealand's involvement.

The 1998 grant was awarded to Robert Biddle of the Computer Science department, Victoria University for research towards issues in Software Engineering using Java.
