Our theme for the 13th annual conference of UniForum New Zealand reflects the fact that Unix technology underpins many of the exciting developments occurring today in the IT world. More than just an operating system, Unix provides the backbone for the Internet, client/server development, RDBMS implementations and, increasingly, mission-critical systems.
Too often the technology can blind people to the underlying information issues, so at the conference we'll take a look at how organisations deal with retrieving and extracting data and turning it into information that impacts both individuals and society as a whole. We will also look closely at the organisation and structure of IT and the pervasive influence of the World Wide Web.
Hear about the latest developments in the NZ, Australian and US marketplaces from top local and international speakers. Our UniForum NZ conferences are famous world-wide for their presentations, large attendances and enthusiastic audiences. So it's not surprising that this year we are welcoming back a number of overseas colleagues who have presented papers at past conferences. In some cases they begged us to invite them back, they had such a good time, and we were more than happy to do so. People like Carl Cargill, Anne Buzbee, Michael Condry, Berny Goodheart, and Roger Fraumann have delighted past audiences. We are also pleased to welcome new presenters such as Frank Crawford, Paul Mockapetris, John Terpstra, Rolf Jester and Brenda Parsons. Plus of course our own excellent kiwi presenters.
Unusual entertainment, great food and wine are hallmarks of UniForum NZ conferences and this year will be no exception. Dress up to our "Magix" theme dinner (what else could we have for conference number 13?) -- witches, warlocks, phantoms, ghouls, vampires -- cast a friendly spell on fellow delegates! Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes and most inventive spells.
While in Rotorua, take advantage of the many local scenic wonders -- the geysers, mud pools, lakes and scenic areas provide a wonderful opportunity to get away from it all. Bring the family and enjoy the local attractions such as golf, forest walks, thermal areas, fishing, the luge and the Agridome.
Rotorua's Quality Hotel in Fenton Street is an excellent venue, with great conference and social facilities. Enjoy the heated swimming pool, sauna, spa pools, tennis court, gymnasium and children's playground.
I invite you to attend our 13th annual conference and I look forward to meeting you there.
